Monument Device 2020
Fired ceramics, card, repurposed tiles.

Completed as an entry into thesis practice work. The model comprises an outlined catalogue base, and a set of 37 ceramic pieces repurposed from past projects and an urban renovation site. Over the course of a week, users arranged the various pieces to form a series of sculptural figures within a scale gallery. The outlined catalogue and the scale gallery act as two sites, where moving or subtracting one piece affects both simultaneously. This highlights the vacancy within either site, a theme explored within my thesis.

The materiality of the work evokes a monumental permanence, but the gathering of, and agile placement of pieces allows users to construct effigies without weight or time. The pieces can be moved like objects in a sandbox, rather than being at the huge, unmalleable scale associated with monument
